Ontario Food Terminal Expansion
The historic Ontario Food Terminal has been bringing together local farmers and food producers with the community since 1954. The facility is operated as a public utility by the Ontario Food Terminal Board and played a vital role in the growth of Southern Ontario. Starting in 2016, Pinpoint Engineering has been working closely with a design-build contractor and the Ontario Food Terminal Board on their most ambitious multi-phase expansion project to date – thus giving this iconic building the means to serve the growth of the GTA far into the future.
The expansion brought forth a new 21,000 sq.ft. dock extension which became operational in summer of 2018; a new 7,000 sq.ft. enclosed waste handling structure designed around energy efficiency and environmentally friendly waste handling practices; as well as a new 3,500 sq.ft. cold storage receiving extension. The existing structure was built with cast in place reinforced concrete, the existing structure was not to be modified and to remain in operation during the construction.
The project required delicate phasing. The soil on site added to the project challenge as it consists of old garbage used as fill in multiple areas under the footprint of the new proposed buildings, deep foundations (caisson and grade beam) designed throughout.
