Culvert Replacements
A culvert is a structure that supports vehicles or pedestrians but allows storm water to flow from one location to another at a lower elevation. The most common culverts we are familiar with is the precast box culvert and the corrugated steel pipe (CSP) culvert. We have been working on culvert projects since incorporation. Our expertise is not limited to new culvert designs but also culvert replacements and all the associated temporary works. In our experience the temporary works are more complicated than the culvert design. The temporary works we have experience with include river diversions and roadway protection. The technical designs required to divert rivers include coffer dams, earth dams, flumes, sheet piles, and river channel diversions. The technical designs required to divert traffic or roadway protection include shoring, sheet piles, solder piles, caissons, road barriers, lane extensions, and demolition sequencing.
The design of new culverts requires many studies to determine the culverts physical dimensions. Beyond that initial phase, the study phase, culvert design is simple and if a box culvert is selected the majority of the following engineering is completed by precast concrete supplier. The more difficult task rests with the engineer responsible to sequence the work, this task is made more complicated if an existing culvert needs replacing. We have experience in all phases of culvert work, the initial “study” phase and the more complicated “construction” phase, the photos above show the “construction” phase of culvert work – unseen and underappreciated.
